Jurriaan Schalken graduated Cum Laude in 2001 as Digital Media Designer at the Utrecht School of Arts, faculty Art, Media & Technology, after which he got his European Media Master of Arts degree. He has worked 20 years, starting with freelancing as art director with projects for Dutch broadcasters VPRO, NCRV, NTR, Blazzhofski / Warner Bros and brands like Nike, Canon, Philips Design, Heineken, Nikon, Essent, Randstad, Start people and Microsoft. Jurriaan’s portfolio, articles and interviews were published in various countries, like the US, England, Germany, The Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea. He won the public choice ‘Website of the Year’ award three times, two Prix Italia awards, and more mostly for his online work. With theoretical and practical experience of usability, graphic design, interactive design, motion design and videography I like to make total concepts that translate into recognizable and multi-applicable designs on every possible platform. I aim to create engaging (interactive) experiences, that are flexible, communicative and easy to use, from games, to apps and websites, to television program identities and leaders/motion design.

With theoretical knowledge of and practical experience with usability, graphic design, interactive design, motion design and videography I like to make total concepts that translate into recognizable and multi-applicable designs on every possible platform. I aim to create engaging (interactive) experiences, that are flexible, communicative and easy to use, from games, to apps and websites, to television program identities and leaders/motion design. In line with evidence based design, I am very interested in science, psychology and technology. Based on research into cognition, I made the info-graphic on the right about how our perception works. Being a pragmatist I want to put theories into practice. For media to communicate effectively, it needs to trigger a desirable emotional response (e.g. curiosity), after which the ratio can be addressed (e.g. what is it about?). I very much like to work with scientists to refine or adjust my interpretations.

As a highly sensitive person (HSP) I perceive a lot, and need to proces a lot. This leads to energy and needs to express itself creatively or physically. All my life I have been drawing, dreaming and since I was 12 I started practicing the art of Taekwondo. Not to fight – but to gain control over my intensity, become more social and outward focussed. Training creativity and the body, increases perception, motor skills and empathatic skills. My work is based on perception with high levels of empathy for people and any subject I find interesting. My practice consists of not letting thought interfere with perception, so perception is pure. This leads to very abstract pattern recognition, an internal mirror of the external laws of nature. This then can be validated by practical skills, measuring effects and the scientific method and research. In my book, skills are proof of development.
